Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then located multiple other marked automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior representative stated the attack made him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he posted on online, mentioning the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in 2020.
